Format the External Drive with “Mac OS Extended” Type

I assume your external drive is formatted with FAT, FAT32 or NTFS format. Many people nowadays prefer to format their USB Flash Drives, External Hard Drives with these format types.

These format types are not much compatible with Mac OS and other Non-Windows operating systems. They do have problems writing the files, although reading files is not an issue. That is why you receive error code 0 in Mac. Format your drive with “Mac OS Extended” type to resolve the problem.

1. Open Disk Utility.
2. A list of all drives shall appear on the left side of your screen.
3. Select your external drive, click the Erase tab.
4. Select the Mac OS Extended (Journalised) option under Volume Format drop down box.
5. Specify a name for your drive and then click Erase button.
6. Wait till the process is finished.

Caution: Formatting a drive erases all the files stored on it. If you have any important files, please backup them to some another location.

Split Large Files into Several Parts

Error code 0 in Mac can occur when you attempt to copy large files (4GB or more). Limitations of the volume format are preventing copying of large files. Split large files into several parts using a file compression program.

1. Open a file compressor program such as 7 Zip File Manager or WinZip.
2. Drag and drop large files into the compressor program Window.
3. Add to Archive dialog shall appear.
4. Specify an archive name, for example, New Archive.
5. Under Split to volumes bytes drop down box, select 650 M- CD option.
6. Click OK. File compression process shall begin. Wait a while.
7. After large files are split into several parts in a zip file, copy them without error code 0 in Mac.
