Improve Skyrim FPS

Low FPS in Skyrim is an annoying problem that most of us face daily. To improve Skyrim FPS do the steps given below:
  • Update your Drivers 
  • Disable Hyper-Threading
  • Scan for Registry Errors
  • Increase the Amount of Virtual Memory
  • Reduce CPU Host Frequency
  • Make VSync Disabled 

Update your Drivers
It is very important to update your drivers on a regular basis to improve Skyrim FPS. Update your drivers using Device Manager as below:
  1. Click Start | Control Panel.
  2. Click System and Security | Administrative Tools.
  3. Double click Computer Management icon.
  4. On the left hand side select Device Manager option.
  5. Right click each device that you wish to update and select Update Driver Software option.

Disable Hyper-Threading
Hyper-Threading technology is found on Intel based computers. You get low FPS in Skyrim if the operating system do not support multimedia processors while Hyper-Threading technology is enabled simultaneously. The best option is to disable it to improve Skyrim FPS.
  1. Restart your computer.
  2. Press F2 or Delete key repeatedly.
  3. In the BIOS Settings, search for Hyper-Threading option.
  4. Select Disable option next to it.
  5. Save and exit the settings. The system shall restart automatically.

Scan for Registry Errors
Registry problems are often contribute lower Skyrim FPS problem. Do a full registry scan, fix all errors and restart your machine to improve Skyrim FPS.

Increase the Amount of Virtual Memory
To improve Skyrim FPS increase the amount of virtual memory. Usually, the operating system sets the size of virtual memory automatically; but here you can modify for getting best results.

  1. Right click My Computer desktop icon, select Properties and then Advanced System Settings.
  2. In the new dialog, click Advanced | Settings (Performance).
  3. Click Advanced | Change (Virtual Memory).
  4. Uncheck the check box Automatically manage paging file size for all drives assuming it is already checked.
  5. Select the drive where Skyrim is installed, usually drive C.
  6. Select Custom Size and increase it.
  7. Click Set | OK | OK | OK.
  8. Restart the computer when prompted to do so.

Reduce CPU Host Frequency
CPU Host Frequency is related to Overclocking, a technology used to increase/ decrease the Front Side Bus (FSB) Frequency. Improve Skyrim FPS by reducing CPU Host Frequency.

Caution: Your operating system may fail to boot after you change CPU Host Frequency. So be sure to record all the previous settings before you change anything.
  1. Open BIOS Settings.
  2. Select Voltage/ Frequency Control menu.
  3. If your CPU Temperature is above 60 degrees C then decrement the value of CPU Host Frequency by 5 to 7 MHz.
  4. Save the settings and exit.
  5. If the operating system fails to load then don’t be panic but just set the previous CPU Host Frequency rate.

Make VSync Disabled
Disabling VSync can help improve Skyrim FPS. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Completely exit Skyrim.
  2. Click Start | My Documents.
  3. Open My Games\Skyrim, right click SkyrimPrefs.ini and select Open With | Notepad.
  4. Press Ctrl + F, type [General] in the Find What box.
  5. Click Find Next.
  6. If you see a setting namely iPresentInterval then replace its value with 0. (Assuming default value is 1 or any other)
  7. Click File | Save and close the window.
