SWTOR FPS Enhancement—How to Fix SWTOR Lagging

Nowadays lots of users are experiencing SWTOR FPS lags. Below are outlined some suggestions and general troubleshooting tips to avoid game lagging and solve online gaming issues.

  • Ensure Minimum System Requirements
  •  Run Launcher as an administrator
  •  Lower firewall security settings and manage background running service
  •  Install Latest copy of .Net Framework and JAVA
  •  Defrag Windows Registry

Ensure System Requirement:

Below are recommended system requirements for playing SWTOR FPS without lags.
  • OS: Windows 7 64bit SP1
  • CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Processor 2.4GHz or better
  • AMD Phenom 2 X4 Quad-core 2.5GHz or better
  • RAM:  4GB RAM or higher
  • Video: ATI/AMD Radeon HD 4850 or better
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 or better
  • 512MB minimum video RAM
  • Shader 3.0 or better fully compatible graphics card
  • Latest drivers for your video card
  • DVD-ROM Drive: 8x speed or faster
  • Disk Space Required: 30 GB

Run Launcher as an Administrator

Run the SWTOR desktop shortcut file as an administrator. Right click the file, choose Run as Administrator option.

Lower Firewall Security Settings:

Firewall program helps you keep your system secure and gives you more control over the data. Lowering your firewall security settings can help reduce  SWTOR FPS lagging.

Follow the steps given below to examine and configure your firewall settings.

  •             Start  | Run | type “wscui.cpl” without quotes | OK
  •       Windows Security Center | Windows Firewall.

There would be three tabs General, Exceptions and Advanced. General tab includes ON, Don’t allow exceptions and Off. From this point you can lower firewall security settings.

Manage Background Running Services:

Unwanted background running services such as running antivirus or some Java app can cause slow performance, lags during game play and issues with Video/Audio. Managing background services should help reducing this problem.

Windows XP/Vista/7
  • Click the Start | Run.
  • Type “msconfig” | OK.
  • Select Services | Disable unwanted services | Apply & OK
Check Port Requirements:

The port numbers that are required are 8995, 12000-12999 and 20000-30000 (TCP).

Install Latest Copies of .NET Framework and Java

For the smooth running of SWTOR, your computer must be uptdated. Update all the critical components including Microsoft .NET Framework and Java Runtime Environment. You can download .NET Framework from Microsoft website and Java Runtime Environment (JRE) from the official website of Java.

Defragment Registry:

Registry is database where all information related to hardware and software is stored in form of entries. This part needs to be cleaned regularly in order to avoid from SWTOR FPS lagging. Defragmenting registry is easy to do with Intel Software Partner Reginout.

The following tool has an "extreme gaming profile" feature that optimizes computer services to run games in super fast mode:

  1. Hello,

I am playing this game for last two months and I got SWTOR Lagging error some times but I could not fix it. I am thank ful to you because you have solve my problem.

  2. ... 8x DVD drive, what does that has to do with FPS lag? Rofl. Same for firewall... very logical.

    1. Sorry but firewalls may block or restrain it which causes servers issues, which lead to lagging, although i do agree on the DVD part.

  3. If one is playing SWTOR FPS with multiplayer online mode and firewall enabled, he can experience lags. The reason behind it is that the filtering machanism of Firewalls may cause drop in quality of data going across. Performance varies depending on what firewall you use.

Well, talking about 8x DVD Drive, if you read the ReadMe file correctly, then it's a minimum recommendation given by the company. Although it does not have a direct impact on the performance of the game; it is recommended to have.

  4. to the above poster, bioware's minimum requirements are very much bullshit :). most people, to experience decent FPS in large cities, need a pretty good computer, with much better specs than those listed as "minimum."

  5. @ Anonymous:

What bullshit facts do you found in minimum system requirements? Can you able to define the term 'good computer'? Tell me how can you run SWTOR or fix it from lagging if your computer doesn't meet the minimum system requirements?

There is no such term like a good computer. According to me, if my computer is able to run all of my favorite programs & games, then it does make sense. But it is possible only when it meets the Minimum System Requirements.

  6. Lowfps is likely due to a cpu that cant handle the shadows mechanism swtor uses. Turn shadows amd bloom distance to lowest setting possible and see how well that works.

  7. I am running a amd dual core 2 gig with 4 gig ram and. 1 gig video and I run it fine with default settings only problem I have is alittle lag in warfronts

  8. Guys, the minimum specs are just so you are able to run the game at a decent performance level, not so you can avoid lag.
Lag is something you cannot completely avoid in SWTOR, not even on the best of computers.
There are lag in PvP and specially lag in the major cities because of all the players nearby, which causes the lag.

I myself have a i7 2600K, 3.4 GHz, 8GB 1600MHz Dominator, GT 560ti Hawk 1GB GDDR5. And I still experience lag when around other players, even after I have no Internet Browsers running in background, no videos playing no music playing and have GFX settings on medium.
There are memory leaks in the game, Bioware aknowledged that and are working to fix it.

There are alot of aspects to lag, and not one solution that fits all.

  9. i play wow with no problems.....WTF with this gay game?????

    1. It hasnt been out for as long as wow n00b, wow was pretty buggy in the vanilla days

  10. WOW is dead m8 quit it dont pay for that any more !!

  11. Ok guys i have had endless problems on lag talked to the Techies at SWTOR, and even tried other solutions myself that all failed until the following. I ran a Quad core,(2.6 X4,with 4GB ram and a GTX280 and could not hold up at the lowest settings, it lagged with the average of 15 FPS , in BG`s it was even worse at 5-8 FPS and was in the verge of ditching the game. So i decided to investigate since Support could not answer my Query. I first of all downloaded the following Nvidia driver from the following link:

After that i played around with my Nvidia Control panel and did the following on the Manage 3D settings,(if this is not in please browse and locate the SWTOR.exe on your Installation folder).

    Anisotropic Filtering = Application Controlled
Antialising gamma Correction = User Global Setting on
Antialising-Mode = Use Global Setting Off
    Antialising-Setting = None
    Antialising-Transparency = Off
    Cuda-GPUs = All
    Maximum Pre-Rendered Frames = 8
Multi-Display/Mixed GPU acceleration = Single Display
Power Management Mode = Prefer Maximum Performance
Texture Filtering Anisotropic Sample Optimization = Off
Texture Filtering - Negative LOD Bias = Allow
    Texture Filtering- Quality = Quality
Texture Filtering- Trilinear Optimisation = On
    Threaded optimisation = On
    Triple Buffering = Off
Texture Filtering - Anisotropic filter optimisation = Off
vertical Sync = Use the 3D application Setting

This sorted out my FPS to 60 - 90 FPS in game and around 25-45 FPS in the Battlegrounds. hope it sorts out the game, i spent a long time formatting and downloading drivers etc that didn`t work out
    Good luck!

    1. i cannot find the manage 3D settings thing can you tell me how?

    2. @TheFAG: Please see the left hand side panel properly. "Manage 3D Settings" is the 2nd option under "3D Settings" category.
