Skyrim Freezes--Why Does Skyrim Freeze, How to Fix it

Technical problems sometime result in Skyrim freezes. There are many reasons why this problem persists. Depending on what type of problem your computer has, the actual solution depends.

This article highlights the most common methods used on the globe to fix Skyrim game. Do them one by one until your problem is fully fixed.

Download and Install Windows Updates
Download and Install Latest Driver Updates
Stop Indexing the Files

Download and Install Windows Updates

Keeping your computer up-to-date is a good idea to fix internal conflicts and application freezing issues. To fix Skyrim freezes, download and install the latest updates released by Microsoft. Following steps are required to launch Windows Updates and update your computer:

Click Start |All Programs | Windows Update.
Click Check for Updates on the welcome page.
The scan process may take several minutes. Please stand by.
After the scan is finished, mark all the critical and highly recommended updates checked.
Click Download button to begin the download & install procedure.

Download and Install Latest Driver Updates

Driver updates are also critical. If all your drivers are updated, then Skyrim freezes will not occur. Do the steps given below:

Download a Driver Scanner software.
Start a full driver update scan. Install the latest versions found.

Stop Indexing the Files

As default, the files on your hard disk are automatically indexed by Windows Search feature. This sometime result in Skyrim freezes. Stop the indexing process and reduce the CPU burden as I described below:

Click Start | Control Panel.
Type following address and press ENTER: Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Performance Information and Tools
Press ENTER.
On the left hand side, click Adjust Indexing Options.
Deselect all the locations and click OK.
Click Close button.

Delete Junk Registry Entries

Registry is a database that contains application and game settings. The registry entries, if filled with junk information, can result in Skyrim freezes. Delete such type of entries and then re-open the game. This will fix your problem.

Download RegInOut Registry Cleaner.
Run the downloaded setup to initialize the installation.
When you’re done, open it and start a full registry scan.
The scan may take several minutes depending on the registry size and hardware configuration. Please wait.
After it is successfully performed, fix all the problems and errors found in your registry ASAP.

Defragment the Disk Drives

Your hard disk may be fragmented. Defragment it using Disk Defragmenter to fix Skyrim freezes. Here’s how:

Click Start| All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Disk Defragmenter.
Select the fragmented disk drive(s) and click Defragment Disks button.
